What is Truth?

What is truth?  Since the beginning of civilization, man has sought to discover the mysteries of the universe that surrounds him. From philosophers of ancient times to the scientists and great thinkers of today, the acquisition of truth remains an ever-present goal.

Webster's 1828 Dictionary defines truth as "Conformity to fact or reality; exact accordance with that which is, or has been, or shall be" and "purity from falsehood".

I would put forth to you that truth is that which remains constant regardless of one's circumstances or emotions. Truth is unchanging and will never contradict itself - what was true yesterday is true today and will be true tomorrow. This is the underlying theology of truth.

Now, while truth does not change, I do believe that "new" truths can be discovered. Let me be clear though; When I refer to a "new truths", I do not mean facts that are created, but rather facts that are realized.

Take, for example, the creation of the modern computer. Everyone knows what a computer is and most of us have one. In fact, they are everywhere - in our homes, our phones and even our cars. If I were to say to you "computers exist" you would immediately realize that this is a true statement. However, thousands of years ago, people did not possess the technology we have available today, so the same statement would not be true thousands of years ago. However, the fact that they did not possess modern technology at the time does not mean that the potential for that technology did not exist. Mankind simply did not discover or "realize" the means to create computers until relatively recent history.

Some may raise the evolution of language as an objection to this idea of constant truth. Throughout history we have seen that, over time, words that originally meant one thing were adopted to describe something else. You might see this as a change of facts, but in reality it is simply an alteration. The word was intended to always carry its original meaning, but due to cultural shifts the interpretation has been skewed. Therefore the truth has not changed, but rather a misconception has been accepted as fact. Such is the great bane of truth.

To truly seek truth, one must be willing to accept and test new information with impartiality. I have often found that truth is that which I do not wish to acknowledge. It's power and authenticity are therefore proven all the more potent when I must bow to it despite my own wishes.

As a facts based person, I always want to know the "why" behind the "what". My intent in creating this blog is to dig deeper into this issue of truth, to discover reality and share it with my fellow truth-seekers, because, at the end of the day, truth is all that really matters. Truth is what gives our lives direction and purpose. Without truth, life is pointless.

I hope that you will find the topics I discuss interesting, but more than that, I hope that it will beget a desire in you to actively look for answers, to desire to know reality, to be a seeker of truth.
